Enterprise Project Management - the PM Toolset

more from less • work smarter • maximise return on investment

Building your project and programme management capability is a fundamental part of delivering against these mantras. But to be effective you need a PM Toolset that supports the framework you have implemented, without imposing huge administration overheads and gives the right tool for the right job to the right person. Microsoft's Enterprise Project Management (EPM) solution does just that.

The Microsoft EPM solution

This comprises:

• Microsoft Office Project Professional 2007

• Microsoft Office Project Web Access

• Microsoft Office Project Server 2007

• Microsoft Office Project Portfolio web Access

• Microsoft Office Project Portfolio Server

Built on the tried and tested infrastructure of Microsoft Windows Server and SQL Server and taking advantage of the collaboration and team working features of Windows SharePoint services, EPM is easily integrated with the Microsoft Office desktop environment and uses familiar tools such as Outlook and Excel to improve efficiency and user acceptance. Much of the planning functionality and all of the reporting and collaboration features are available through the cost effective Project Web Access tool. This means you can give the right tool for the right job, to the right person, at the right price!

The right implementation

Enterprise project management system implementations have often failed to deliver the expected benefits. Typical problems include:

n• Failure to understand the requirement
• Lack of focussed training
• Over ambitious launch
n• Lack of executive sponsorship
n• Over-engineered solutions
n• Lack of on-going support and training

TCL's approach to implementing an EPM solution is a business requirement driven three stage process.

Stage 1

Understand the business requirement through a focussed EPM maturity study to understand the current capabilities of the organisation, identify the critical issues and assess the ability of the organisation to adopt change. From this we produce a report on the findings together with a high level business case for a targeted pilot implementation

Stage 2

On acceptance of the stage 1 report we develop the detailed business case for the pilot and, subject to approval, implement and embed the solution. As the pilot is progressed additional functionality is added and lessons are learned for adoption in the next stage.

Stage 3

This stage is about rolling out the solution to encompass more projects and programmes, adding additional functionality as the business drivers for it come into play.

Critical success factors

n• The EPM solution reflects and supports the project & programme framework
• There is senior management sponsorship of the solution
• Users are trained in how the EPM and framework work together within the business rather than the standard features of the EPM toolset
n• Start small and grow
n• Acceptance that the solution will evolve and that training and support needs to be on-going
