Effective Project Board Workshop

High profile project failures abound - see the headlines.

But these are only the tip of the iceberg. Depending on your survey of choice, 50 - 85% of projects fail in some way or another.

Some of the major causes of project failure stem from the Project Board. An ineffective Project Board, comprising members that don’t understand, or who are not committed to their roles, can result in an isolated, direction-less project.

Role of the Project Board

The Project Board has a key role to play in delivering a successful project. Comprising the Project Sponsor, Accountable Executive/Senior User and other key stakeholders, their leadership and support provide the environment in which the Project Manager and his team operate to deliver against the project’s goals.

At TCL, we believe a holistic approach is needed to successfully deliver projects. This starts with the Project Board. They must be empowered to do their job. But they must also understand their role, be capable of executing it and be prepared to accept the responsibilities. TCL can help prepare your Project Boards to fulfil their role effectively.

The workshop

TCL’s one day workshop is designed to be run in-house for your organisation. Tailored to reflect your terminology, methods and project processes, it focuses on the key aspects of the Project Board’s role in successfully delivering projects.

The workshop is designed to be highly interactive and responsive to the needs of a senior audience. The morning comprises a series of facilitated discussions/brainstorms around topical projects or situations which explore the main causes for project failure. It also includes a brief immersion in the world of the project manager through a simulation exercise or case study.

The output from the morning sessions is used to shape the afternoon with material drawn from a range of topics including:

bullet Roles & Responsibilities
bullet Making delivery happen
bullet Risk management
bullet Effective planning
bullet Project initiation
bullet Assessing success
bullet Meeting management
bullet Project reporting
bullet Communications

Delegates are left with a comprehensive set of notes and a handy pocket reference guide for Project Boards summarising the role of the Project Board and what to look for in identifying and preventing failure.

The facilitators collate the issues and actions raised during the workshop and feed them back to the delegates after the event

Previous delegates comments include:

“Fun, thought-provoking, good balance between interactions and presentations.” – MD Financial Services Organisation

“Good high level session; interactive and some good discussions. Very good manual. Booklet excellent.” – Accountable Executive

“Very useful, I have taken away a range of ideas that can help my project” – Accountable Executive
