Effective Project Risk Management Workshop

Change is the only constant in today’s fast moving economy, and the vast majority of that change is delivered through projects. The need for effective project management is greater than ever, but projects are inherently risky ventures. Project management methods have evolved and matured to mitigate generic project risks such as resource shortages or conflicts, poor estimation and lack of planning but still between 50 - 85% of projects fail in some way or another.  

 

What is needed is an effective approach to project risk management.

A typical approach to risk management

Project risk management is a recognised part of any approach to project management. For many projects this starts with an initial brainstorming of risks during project initiation and definition stage. These get assessed, prioritised, countermeasures identified and then everything is recorded in a log.

Thereafter, risk management is typically something the project manager does. The top five risks might be reported on in progress reports and the log reviewed with the team at the end of progress or team meetings. if there’s time.

What is really needed

Risk management is a discipline that everyone involved in the project needs to be aware of and participate in. Projects are about delivering things. At any point in a project those deliverables are typically in the future. That makes their delivery uncertain i.e. risky. Risk management is about identifying the risks causing the uncertainty and reducing their impact.

Effective project risk management therefore focuses the project team on the future (you can read about the past in the progress report). It equips the team with the processes, tools and techniques to identify, assess and plan mitigations for the risks that lie in wait for your projects.

The workshop

This 1 day workshop is designed to be run in-house for your organisation. Tailored to reflect your terminology, framework and risk management processes, the workshop looks at the key components of a successful risk management framework, the stages in the risk management process, roles & responsibilities, tools and techniques. It provides a solid basis for the management of risk in delivering successful projects.
