Business change management

It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent; it is the one that is most adaptable to change." - Charles Robert Darwin

Change is a way of life in today’s business; some is carried out under the banner of business as usual (BAU) and other more fundamental change is undertaken within a more disciplined  programme or project environment. Change can be in response to any number of drivers that exist in a dynamic marketplace. For example, the impact of globalisation, increased or new regulations, the introduction of new technology, cost reduction or more recently the desire to restructure the organisation and to improve the overall efficiency of the business.

From an organisational perspective, managing business change effectively is now recognised as a key differentiator with regards to the competition. It is invariably presented as an opportunity that must not be passed over. However, it can be disruptive and needs to be properly managed through implementation to achieve the desired result.

From an individual’s perspective, change can be exhilarating, terrifying or any point in between. It may involve new opportunities for staff or the loss of their jobs. It can be something which some people desire and embrace whilst others do not see the need for it and will resist it. For the majority of people it is something that needs to be explained so that they can understand “what’s in it for me?”

Successful change planning and delivery needs to take into account both of the perspectives mentioned above.  By delivering change through a programme of activity businesses are trying to maximise the benefits of planned change which is key to gaining a proper return on investment.  TCL has developed a ‘Blueprint for Change’ which uses a 9 stage process that is underpinned by programme management:
