The Project Management Championship winners....
...and what a close run thing it was!

Ready for the finalIn the days leading up to Project Challenge we had a rather fraught time with several teams pulling out due to work commitments or because they had finally found work after weeks of looking. One contestant was even taken in to hospital and we wondered if we would have a competition at all.

The trophiesBut come the day, we had the trophies, the prizes and three teams eager to accept the challenge:

 - The Mystery PM's from BGL Group

 - Effective Project Delivery from Aston Business School

 - Anglia Ruskin from Anglia-Ruskin University.

In fact, Anglia Ruskin were down to just their team leader Bill Wright but Jacky Wilde, who had just popped along to the TCL stand to find out more about us, was persuaded to join Bill and be an honourary "Anglia Ruskinite".

After a brief welcome and introduction to SimulTrain®, the project management simulation that was the basis for the final, the teams were off and running. The teams were given a pre-approved project with 17 tasks and a critical path identified, 3 core resources and availability for all the other company resources they could draw apon. The budget and timescales had been set so they "just" had to manage the project to delivery. Pretty much like real life then!  First up, they had to plan their project using the simulator and they were given about an hour for this. Then the simulator kicked off and the teams had to make a series of decisions, deal with team members, bosses, suppliers etc and cope with errors and delays just like any real project. After 4 simulated weeks - about an hour and a half in real time - the simulator stopped for a progress report:

Aston Progress Report Mystery PM Progress Report Anglia Ruskin Progress Report

The progress reports were prepared overnight and delivered on day 2. Then it was back to re-planning before the simulation was restarted for the run to the finish.

The results, in reverse order were:

AstonIn 3rd place with 364 points and winners of the wooden spoons despite being just 5 points behind the winners were... Effective Project Delivery from Aston Business School. Well done to Kunal Bhatia, Viren Chitroda and Andreas Kambanis and their support team from the Business School of Zeenat Ahmed and Naomi Brookes

Anglis RuskinIn second place and winners of the Jelly Babies (the most sort after prize) were Anglia Rusking on 367 points. Well done to Bill Wright and the co-opted Jacky Wild.

Mystery PMsWhich means that the winners were The Mystery PM's from BGL Group with a winning total of 369. Well done to team leader Tariqul Hashan and team members Beverley Laud and Neil Martin. who received the PM Championship shield to hold until next time, miniture shields to keep and the drink of champions, champagne of course. We hope that Tariqul and his team will come back to present the trophy to the winners next time around.

All that remains is to say thank you to Richard White at Management Events for donating the stand space, STS for use of Simultrain® for the final and X-AM for the preliminary round, all the TCL associates that helped Allen and David, TCL's directors, run the event and of course the finalists:

What is The Project Management Championship?

The  Project Management Championship is a new and exciting competition open to anyone interested in project management. Experienced or new to the field, The Project Management Championship is a level playing field for all entrants.

Delivering projects is all about team work so The Project Management Championship is designed for teams of three who aspire to the title of "Project Management Champions" . First you battle it out through a preliminary on-line round for the right to compete head-to-head in the final at Project Challenge. Finalists run a simulated project over 2 days using SimulTrain® - the project management simulator from STS.

The winners will be the team with the best weighted scores across four key measures of success: costs, schedule (on-time), quality and motivation. The winners will hold The Project Management Championship (Midlands & North or London & South) trophy for the year and receive individual trophies to keep together with the traditional drink of champions - champagne. The last placed team will get the wooden spoons!
